Joseph came from Prezemel, Poland. He had 2 brothers. He had some schooling and served an apprenticeship in painting and decorating and was very good at it. After he came to America, He and Steven Zavisza were very good friends. After Steven died, his wife Katherine Fudala Zavisza was considering going back to her parents in Hungary. Joseph said to wait a year so they could be married. Joseph apparently had rheumatic fever when young for he had a serious heart condition and the hard work was all wrong for him. He didn't have much choice though, because he had a large family to support and there was no heart surgery being done then.
