Clarence was killed after falling off a cliff at Crowder's Mnt. after a boy scout camping trip. He was living with his uncle, L.O. Welch, in Gastonia at the time of his death and worked at the Dunn Mill.
His scout camping group had packed up after their overnight stay on the mountain and were hiking back down when they turned a sharp corner and Clarence slipped. His scout group climbed down to help him, but Clarence died as they approached him.
