From the Funeral Records of Pastor Benjamin G. Welder (page 43):
"John Steffe, born June 5, 1821, died October 25, 1892 in Brecknock, buried October 29, 1892 at Muddy Creek Church. Aged 71 years, 4 months, 20 days. Baptized by Rev. Guldin. Confirmed Lutheran. Married to Susan Weinhold on December 5, 1844. 1 child living. Sickness, Pneumonia. Sick for 4 days. Text: Psa. 144:4." (Reference kindly provided by contributor K. McCrea (#47696803). Contributor further observes that inscriptions were recorded in 1910, and that since John was not among those recorded it is probable that he never had a headstone.

CENSUSES:
1850 Brecknock, Berks: John Steffe 29, Susan 26, Lidia 13. Keziah 5. Note that the index of "13" for Lidia is correct. Lidia was either adopted or she was a child John sired during his teens out of wedlock.

A little over a week before the couple lost Maria, they lost a Franklin who never appeared on a census, born in 1861 and died October 24, 1865. His parentage is specified on his headstone.
