Groton - Mae Barber Deviney, 87, formerly of Groton, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2016, at Kent County Hospital in Warwick, R.I.

She was born in New London, on May 2, 1929, the daughter of Leo and Gladys (Sefcik) Lemelin. Mae was married to Carl R. Barber Sr. on Aug. 23, 1947, Carl passed away May 10, 1975. She was married to William Deviney on Feb. 6, 1981, William passed away May 9, 2002.

Mae graduated from Chapman Technical School in 1947 and had worked as a plan file clerk at Electric Boat Company. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, the former Rosary Society at the church and had served on the parish council.

Mae is survived by two sons, Carl R. Barber Jr. of Summerfield, Fla. and Bruce E. Barber of Moncks Corner, S.C.; three daughters, Karen Field of N. Stonington, Carol A. Barber of Pawcatuck and Gail Morrell of Mystic. She is also survived by four sisters, Arlene Smith of New London, Ina Foley of Quaker Hill, Gladys Waltz of Groton and Barbara Mack of Shelby, Ohio; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Leonard Allen and Leo Lemelin; and her sisters, Alice Gore and Irene George.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Sacred Heart Church, Sacred Heart Drive, Groton. Interment will be in Colonel Ledyard Cemetery. Visiting hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, at the Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St., New London.

Donations in her memory may be directed to the Salvation Army, 11 Governor Winthrop Blvd., New London, CT 06320 or the Disabled American Veterans , 101 Yantic Lane, Norwich, CT 06360.
