Former Wheaton Glass employee Anthony Abate of Elk Township, a World War II Army veteran, died Saturday in John F. Kennedy Memorial. Hospital in Turnersville after suffering from cancer. He was 72.
Born in Philadelphia, he was an Elk Township resident for 34 years and was a 1936 graduate of South Philadelphia High School Prior to retirement in 1980, he was employed as an assembler by the Wheaton Glass Co. for 20 years. Mr. Abate was a member and past president of the Elk Township Senior Citizens Club, and served as a past director of the Elk Township's Welfare and Civil Defense departments and the Board of Health.
He was also a member of the American Association of Retired Persons. He enlisted in the Army in 1941 and served during World War II in the European Theater from 1943-45. Achieving the rank of Command Sergeant Major, he received the American Defense Service Ribbon and the European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon.
Survivors include his wife Edith (DeLuca); three sons, Joseph and Robert, both of Clayton and Louis of Smithville; two brothers, Michael and Jack, both of Philadelphia; a sister, Millie Melfi of Willingboro; and three grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the Barclay Funeral Home in Clayton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St Catherine Roman Catholic Church in Clayton. Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park in Hurffville. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O.
