Mrs. Shay always kept up with the times. When she was 17, for the adventure she sailed on her father's schooners to the Arctic and elsewhere as a cook. Her dislike of eating fish lasted the rest of her life. She married her husband, Donald Shay, after a two-week courtship. Donald was an airmail pilot flying between Detroit and Cleveland; he died in a plane crash in 1926. Mrs. Shay worked as a seamstress at the B. Siegel Department Store in Detroit, retiring around 1947.
