Mrs. Helms, 89, of Charlotte, died Monday, November 9, 2009 at Presbyterian Hospital.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 14, at Amity Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Grady Moseley and the Rev. Jonathan Meythaler officiating. A reception will follow the service in Johnston Hall.
Born September 7, 1920 in South Boston, VA, Mrs. Helms was a daughter of the late L. Dewitt King and Melissa Black King. She attended Tech High School and Central Piedmont Community College. She was a teacher's assistant with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Mrs. Helms was a longtime member of Amity Presbyterian Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and church historian and was a Life Member of Women of the Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Richard Felix Helms, her sister, Besse Rankin and her brother, Bill King. Mrs. Helms was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and was affectionately known as MaMaw.
She is survived by two sons, three daughters, She is also survived by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren a cousin, and a number of nieces and nephews.
