Emma Barrett, a longtime area resident died Saturday, December 16, 2006 in Elant at Goshen. She was 83 years old.
The daughter of the late Floyd and Ruth Jones Wright, she was born May 13, 1923.
During a terrible storm, Emma held tight to her grandmother in fear and cried that she hated the thunder and lighting. Her Grandmother told her never to hate anything. And from that day on, Emma never expressed hatred again. She never hated the people that made her enter through the back door or wear plastic bags to try on shoes in the stores. She never hated the kids that teased her. She would run under the porch floor and cry. She believed in a good cry. But she refused to hate. She loved her friends and enemies. She loved service to others. And above all, she loved God. Emma began working at a very young age. She would often say that work won't kill but aggravation will.
She worked in the house cooking, cleaning and helping to raise her siblings. She had many chores before school and was always late or missed school. As a result, she graduated from East Suffolk High School in 1943 at the age of 20. She then attended a nursing school for "coloreds" in Raleigh-Durham, N.C. and specialized in labor and delivery. Over her nursing career, her hands were the first to touch thousands of babies and she cared for the same number of mothers. She retired from nursing after over 40 years of service in 1986.
Doctors said she would never be able to conceive or a carry a child to term in her womb. But she prayed. And God has power over all affairs. So at 36 years old she bore her son, Kevin and at 38, she bore her daughter Deedee. She was a Godmother, a den mother and a stage mother. She was noted locally for her handmade novelty chocolates that she sold at the gift shop at Horton Memorial Hospital and later at her shop, D & E Sweet Novelty Shop in Bloomingburg. She made wedding cakes and baked goods. She put love into all that she made. Her siblings will always remember her kindness and gifts to them after their mother passed away. She often said, "Watch and pray" and "God is good."
As Alzheimer's took her senses, she would often smile and say, "I am still among the living" or chuckle and say "I don't get around much anymore." Emma lived the last years of her life being cared for at Elant in Goshen. After her many years of selfless giving to others, she was given kindness and loving care at Elant. The family is humbly grateful to the service of the many caretakers who fed, cleaned and dressed her. Like Emma, they are caregivers who are rarely recognized but highly valued. God bless them all.

James Wright and Elvin Wright of Suffolk, Va., Charles Wright of Jonesboro, GA, Timothy Wright and Vinson Wright of Boston, Mass.; sisters: Ruth Johnson of Detroit, Mich., Mary Scott and Deborah Gibbs of Boston, Mass., Leslie Watts of Williamsburgh, Va., and Della Gary of Beverly, N.J.
Emma was predeceased by two brothers, Cephus Wright and Alfonso Wright and sister Mamie Stewart.
A Funeral Service will be held at the Community Church of Bloomingburg on Saturday, December 23 at 10 a.m., with Pastor Robert Hewitt officiating. Burial will follow in Bloomingburg Rural Cemetery, Bloomingburg.
