Mary was raised in Morris, Illinois. She worked as a maid in high school for a wealthy family in Morris. After high school she attended nursing school and graduated in 1929 from Mercy Hospital in Chicago. She was a registered nurse and did private duty where she met George, who was one of her patients. George had an operation in 1932 and Mary was his night nurse. They were married in 1934. She was active in the Red Cross during World War II while her husband was stationed in Florida. She never worked as a nurse after she was married. She was an overly religious Catholic and frequently was in ill health. She loved crossword puzzles and played bridge about five times a week after 1965, she was in bridge tournaments. She had a heart attack about 3 years before she died. She died of cancer of the liver (mesothelioma) from asbestos. She was a fantasic seamstress and did outstanding crocheting usually when sick. She had a phobia about germs. She was a staunch Republican. Mary traveled in Europe, Ireland, Hawaii and most of the states of the U.S. She had great memory retention. She loved to dance, but never did it after she was married because George didn't enjoy it. George wasn't Catholic and his mother never liked Catholics and made life very difficult for Mary. Mary collected antiques. She had only good things to say about her mother and step-father. She was very distressed when her oldest daughter died and never really got over it.
