Alice Canapary McCarthy was born in Brooklyn in 1925.Her Parents were Alice Brennan and Ed Canapary. They were living in Cuba when Alice became pregnant. Ed worked for his father and was managing the family's furniture business in Caiberian,Cuba.Since they wanted their first child to be born in the United States, Alice decided to come home and stay with the Brennan family. Unfortunately, there was a steamship strike in Cuba at the time so Alice hitched a ride on a banana boat to New York so little Alice was born in Brooklyn. After the doctors released them, both Alices sailed for Caiberian. The family had a wonderful life there in the tropics until the Great depression hit Cuba. People were scavenging for food and didn't have the funds to buy expensive furniture so they left Cuba and came home to the United States.
Alice was a very intelligent and nice girl. She was by far the smartest girl ever to go to Saint Saviours Grammar and High School. She was the editor of the school Paper, played the cello and was the High School Valedictorian. She graduated from Mount Saint Vincent College, a Catholic college where the Sisters were from the order of The Sisters of Charity. She also studied Accounting at Columbia University. She became the first woman CPA (Certified Public Accountant)in New York City. She worked in Manhattan.
She Married Joseph McCarthy and they had two children, a girl Phyllis and a boy two years later. The McCarthy family lived in a new development in lower manhattan called Stuyvesant Town.Alice died at age 32 when Phyllis was four and her brother was only two.She passed away from a lealing valve in her heart, which was caused by having rheumatic fever when she was younger. Her family was devastated when she was gone. She would have had a brillant career ahead and a wonderful life with her Joe and her children.
