MRS. WM. T. PORTER DEAD
Widow of Former President of the Water Commission Falls Down a Flight of Stairs and Expires Within Fifteen Minutes.
Mrs. Sophia S. Porter, widow of William T. Porter, fell down a stairway at her home, No. 1100 Adams Street, yesterday afternoon about 4 o'clock, and her death resulted within fifteen minutes. It is believed that she was stricken with vertigo or apoplexy about the time she started to descend the stairway, which caused her to plunge to the bottom. Mrs. Porter was about 69 years old.
She was preparing to go shopping, and her carriage was waiting at the door, when the fatal fall occurred.
As Mrs. Porter started down the steps, her daughter, Mrs. David R. Allmond, called to her and was about to hand her a letter to mail when Mrs. Porter lost her balance and plunged headforemost down the stairway. She alighted on the landing, about three or four steps from the first floor and sustained a bruise across her forehead by the force of her fall.
She was picked up by Mrs. Allmond and a maid and was placed on a couch in the library.
Mrs. Porter did not seem to be seriously injured, and after being assisted to her feet she inquired "Did I break my neck?" She was made comfortable in the library and Dr. James A. Draper arrived in about ten minutes. Mrs. Porter died suddenly a few minutes afterward, however. Dr. Draper was unable to discover any fracture of Mrs. Porter's neck as a result of the fall, and it is likely that she was attacked with apoplexy, which caused her to fall and resulted in her death.
William T. Porter, husband of Mrs. Porter, died on January 25, 1901.
