King Niels of Denmark. (English translation Nicholas.) His year of birth is an estimate. He succeeded his brother Eric Evergood and has been assumed to be the youngest son of King Swain II Estridson. As a ruler he was considered devoid of a will of his own as he followed policies set by his Swedish-born first wife Queen Margaret Colleen-of-Peace and after her death by his son Magnus. He actively supported canonization for the late King Canute IV the Holy. He also helped his son become King Magnus I of Sweden by turning on Prince Canute Lord, a nephew he had promoted but who turned out to be a potential successor and thus was killed. Though supported by the Danish clergy, his actions caused a civil war in which he was assassinated after Magnus also had fallen in battle earlier the same year. His widowed second wife Queen Wolfhilda, who had been married to one Swedish king before him, proceeded to marry another.
