Mary Alice Baughman Spilman passed away at her home Monday, October 31, 2016 in Waterford Mills, IN. She was born July 3, 1931 in Plymouth, IN. Her family moved to Goshen three months later for her father’s job with NIPSCO. She graduated from Goshen High School in 1949 as salutatorian and then attended DePauw University graduating with a BA in 1953.
Mary was married on August 23, 1953 to Donn Hiatt Spilman. Together they started the first of their sixty-three years of marriage in Jacksonville, NC where Donn fulfilled his last year in the Navy. They moved to Bloomington, IN in the winter of 1955 and stayed until 1961 when Donn graduated from dental school. Relocating to Osceola, IN soon after where Mary raised five children, while working the front office of dental practice, and being a part-time substitute teacher in the Penn Harris Madison school system. They retired in 2000 and moved back to the family homestead in Waterford Mills, IN. She continued her volunteering at Goshen Hospital for over thirteen years.
She was an avid reader, knitter and enjoyed attending all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities. For the past twenty-five years she attended Goshen College Mennonite Church and was very active in the Homebuilders Sunday School class. Survivors include her husband Donn Spilman, Nan Baughman (sister-in-law) New Bern NC, daughter Sue (Bill) Hadler of Greensburg IN, sons William (Melissa) Spilman of Waterford Mills IN, John (Susan) Spilman of Chicago IL, Jeff (Heather) Spilman of Belleair FL, fifteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son Donn Spilman Jr.
Services will be held at the College Mennonite Church on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at 10:30 a.m., with a reception immediately following the service in the fellowship hall. A private burial will be held Saturday afternoon in Violett Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Goshen Hospital Hospice or Jubilee Fund at the Goshen College Mennonite Church.
