Adolphus Barbee, age 85, died April 6, 1971 at the VA Hospital in Durham County, North Carolina.


He was born July 23, 1885 in Orange County, North Carolina, a son of Bart and Sallie (Wilson) Barbee.


Bart was a fireman and foreman of his fire company. Like his father who owned a fish market, he became a businessman, having a dry cleaners years ago in Virginia, then a corner store in Durham, North Carolina where he lived for years. Various birth years are in his official records.


He was a U. S. Army, WWI Veteran. He survived combat in the Meuse-Argonne, the deadliest battle Americans ever fought in.


He and Iola Tucker (1891-1957) were married December 27, 1919 in Durham County, North Carolina.


He was preceded in death by his parents, wives and some of his siblings.


Burial in Beechwood Cemetery, Durham, Durham County, North Carolina.

His brother-in-law and his sister, William and Mattie (Barbee) Page operated Pine Street Taxi and Page Grocery Store on South Roxboro Street.

One of his grand nephews was Michael Tillman, a chauffeur of sports figure, "Jimmy the Greek" Snyder.


Adolphus Barbee (native of Orange County), a childless widower, had a little corner store.


His grave is one in a plot with his father and three nephews. He never had military rites
