Enlisted at age 24 on February 10, 1865, as a private with Co. K, 151st Indiana Infantry. He was Absent on Furlough from August 23 1865. Received notice of his detention at Indianapolis, Indiana, until arrival of Regiment Mustered out September 19, 1865.

He applied for pension as Invalid June 28, 1880 App # 384,890 his widow Sarah W. applied January 26, 1921 app # 1168966. from the State of Indiana.

Cause of death listed as Chronic Intestinal Nephritis. Information from microfilm of WPA/American Legion inventory (1939-1940). Name has also been seen spelled Akars.
