Son of Henry Byrd and Nancy Baldwin.

He married Anna Tutt on March 25, 1825. They had seven children: Mahala (born 1-9-1826); William R. (born 10-8-1829, and died 6-11-1881, killed by lightning); Charles Lewis (born 9-12-1835); Michael (born 8-13-1832); Samuel P. (born 1-4-1837); Anderson Campbell (born 6-8-1841); and George F. (born 7-30-1844).

John maintained a Family Bible.
