Don Payne, Sr. of 5466 Asheville Highway, Greeneville, died Friday, September 3, at Laughlin Memorial Hospital.

He was retired from the US Postal Service, a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Greeneville and was raised up in the Cedar Creek Presbyterian Church. He was an Elder and taught Sunday school for over 25 years. He was a member of the Greeneville Moose Lodge #692, Greeneville VFW Post 1990, the Retired Postal Carriers Union and was a veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific Theater, US Army Air Corps and he was very active in the parks and recreation department, serving on the board of directors and coaching for over 35 years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lon and Docie Shelton Payne; his first wife, Lorine Payne; and four brothers, Lowery, Henry, Carl and Ralph.

He is survived by his wife, June Phipps Payne; son, Don Payne, Jr.; step-son, J. D. Phipps; step-daughter, Jacqueline G. Phipps; two grandsons & one granddaughter-in-law, Don S. Payne and Brett and wife, Kristi Payne; great-grandsons, Chance and Nicklaus Payne; brother, Harry Payne; sisters, Alice Renner, Agnes Jaynes, Rose Thorpe, Edie Dinwiddie and Nelle Collins; and a special former daughter-in-law, Susan M. Payne.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Cedar Creek Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dan Donaldson and Rev. Bob Noble officiating. Interment will be at Cedar Creek Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Don S. Payne, Brett J. Payne, Don Payne, Jr., Mike Dinwiddie, Tim Dinwiddie, Chuck Howard, Doug Frye and David Carls.

The body is at Kiser Funeral Home where the family received friends on Saturday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

The body will lie in state 30 minutes preceding services at the church on Sunday. Military Graveside Rites will be performed at the cemetery by VFW Post #1990.

Kiser Funeral Home is in charge.
