Obit. Stoos, John (1876-1956)

Funeral services were held at St. Mary's Catholic church at nine o'clock this (Thursday) morning for John Stoos, 81, well known former Remsen farmer, who passed away Saturday, April 21 in a nursing home in Seapoose(?), Oregon.

Mr. Stoos in failing health more than a year, had made his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Scholten, at Seapoose for seven years since leaving Remsen.

John Stoos was born in the village of Berburg, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, April 3, 1875, and came to this country at the age of 26 years, in 1901. He came directly to Remsen where he had a few relatives and numerous old-country friends.

Working on a farm for one year, he was united in marriage in 1902 to Catherine Newell, the marriage taking place in St. Mary's Catholic church and performed by the then pastor, the Rev. Father F.X. Schulte.

Mr. and Mrs. Stoos immediately settled on a farm six miles north of town and subsequently operated farms south of town and again immediately north on the present John Freking place. While living there Mrs. Stoos passed away in 1929.

Mr. Stoos moved into town and busies himself with general farm work for several years and left for Oregon in 1949.

John Stoos was a lifelong Catholic, a man of many splendid traits and had numerous friends in this area who regretted to hear of his final illness and his death.

The body arrived here by rail Wednesday at noon and wake was at the Fisch funeral home during the afternoon and evening. Many old friends called to join in recitation of the rosary and to offer their condolences to the bereaved family of a good old former resident.

Surviving are five sons and three daughters: Henry, Jerome and Mrs. Elmer (Florentine) Nitzschke, all of Remsen; Edward of Quimby, Joseph of Yankton, S.D.; Mrs. Schulten of Oregon; Mary of Portland, Ore. and Ray of Sioux City. Preceding him in death besides his wife were an infant daughter Catherine, and John, who lost his life in World War II.

One brother, Nicholas, of Remsen, and two brothers, Michael and Henry, both in the old home in Luxembourg, also survive. There are 34 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

The requiem High Mass was sung by the pastor, Rev. Father George Theobald, with interment in St. Mary's cemetery. Pall bearers were six grandsons – Richard and Stanley Stoos and Ronald Nitzschke, all of Remsen; Donald Stoos of Yankton, S.D.; James Stoos of Quimby and Robert McLaughlin of Sioux City.
