William Ayers.
William Ayers of Bass Lake, one of the oldest and best known pioneer citizens of the county, passed away at the family home on the east side of the lake last evening at 7:45 o'clock. An attack of pneumonia, coupled with a paralytic stroke the first of this week, caused his death. Mr. Ayers enjoyed pretty good health all winter and was confined to his bed for only about a week during his last illness. The funeral services, in charge of Rev. C. Polen of Kewanna, will be conducted from the Bass lake church tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon at 2 o'clock and interment will be made in the adjoining cemetery.
William Ayers, son of Thomas and Matilda Ayers was born at Parkersburg, West Virginia, Jan. 15, 1834, and departed this life Feb. 27, 1917, at the age of 83 years, 1 month and 12 days. He was united in marriage to Nancy P. Wood, July 17, 1864, on the same farm where they now reside, and, with the exception of a few years spent in Louisville, Ky., have resided continuously until his death. Two children were born to this union: Irvin, who died 22 years ago, and Kennie, who was married to John Shonts, of Streator, Ill, June 26, 1889, and who, with her husband, three children, Mrs. Donald Blair and Misses Marion and Gertrude Shonts, and one grandchild, are present to share the sorrows of their widowed mother. Mr. Ayers, because of his long residence at the lake, was known to hundreds of friends throughout the county and, because of his sterling qualities and splendid character, was held in high esteem by all neighbors and friends. His death is deeply mourned by all who knew him.

Obituary published in the Knox Starke County Democrat (Knox, IN), on February 28, 1917, pgs. 1 and 4.
