Swedish statesman. He was a count, politician, military officer and a poet. In 1647 he joined the Swedish Privy Council. In time he held several government offices in Sweden of great power and influence. The Swedish overseas possession Livonia was ruled by him as governor-general. He was held in high esteem by his wife's cousin Queen Christina of Sweden and when his brother-in-law King Carl X Gustaf suddenly died, he was in the regency during the minority of King Carl XI of Sweden. He fell from grace when Carl IX came to power of his own, and he was among the many noblemen then held accountable for mismanagement and corruption. By then, however, he was a de facto prince consort as married to the king's paternal aunt, a Princess of Sweden. He is remembered for a huge palace called Makalös that be built (later destroyed) across the water from the Royal Castle in downtown Stockholm, and for the silver throne that he gave his cousin for her 1650 coronation, which is still the throne of the Swedish monarchs.
