Matheus Bitencourt da Silva, known as Matheus Biteco, was born on June 28, 1995 in Porto Alegre, Brazil. He was a right back defensive midfielder for the Brazilian soccer team Chapecoense. He was a loving husband and the father of a beautiful 4-month-old baby boy named Miguel, who he loved beyond measure.

Matheus began his career in soccer under Grêmio's youth categories from 2001 to 2012, eventually graduating and professionally debuting in 2013 with the same team. He joined Chapecoense on a loan for the 2016 Season, after playing for Brazil U20 from 2013 to 2015. He received honors in 2013 with Brazil U20. His Chapecoense team number was 77. He was a talented soccer player, having played a total of 63 games.

Matheus was a victim of the LaMia Airlines Flight 2933 crash on November 28, 2016 over Cerro Gordo, Colombia. Matheus and most of his Chapecoense teammates were traveling on a charter plane, from Bolivia to Colombia, to play in the 2016 Copa Sudamericana Finals against a Colombian team. At 10:00pm, the crew of the plane declared electrical and fuel emergencies while flying over Colombia, due to fuel exhaustion. The plane crashed into the mountains of Cerro Gordo moments later, killing 71 of the 77 people onboard. 19 out of 22 Chapecoense players on the plane died.

The last note Matheus made in his Bible study book before he died was Psalm 27:4, which reads:

One thing I ask from the Lord,
this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
and to seek him in his temple.

Matheus's body was recovered and identified, and was buried at the Cemitério Jardim da Paz in Porto Alegre.
