Gimenez and most of his Chapecoense teammates were traveling on a charter plane, from Bolivia to Colombia, to play in the 2016 Copa Sudamericana Finals against a Colombian team. At 10:00pm, the crew of the plane declared electrical and fuel emergencies while flying over Colombia, due to fuel exhaustion. The plane crashed into the mountains of Cerro Gordo moments later, killing 71 of the 77 people onboard. 19 out of 22 Chapecoense players on the plane died.
Gimenez's body was recovered and identified, and was buried at the Cemitério de Crevinhos in Crevinhos Municipal, São Paulo.
