Mrs. Jane Filgate Surprised by Large
Gathering on Birthday Anniversary.
While Mrs. Jane Filgate was waiting
at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. J.
Coxon, Tuesday afternoon, for three or
four ladies whom she expected would
come to help her celebrate her 80th
birthday, she was much surprised when
these few ladies brought 60 more with them
to help in the celebration. These friends
came from all parts of Barre Town and
City and those present from out of town
were a niece, Mrs. J. Stewart of Mont
real, Miss Sadie Seale of Haverhill,
Mass., Mrs. William Seale of Kinnears
Mills, P. Q., and Mrs. W. E. Lappin, Miss
Annie E. Greenlay and Mrs. Arthur
Edwards of Springfield, Mass. Several of
Mrs. Filgate's great grandchildren were
among the party.
A large number of beautiful gifts,
including a piece of gold money, which was
presented by Rev. W. J. M. Beattie in
behalf of the company, helped to show
the love and esteem in which "Grandma"
Filgate is held. During the afternoon,
which was very pleasantly spent,
refreshments of ice cream, cake and
lemonade were served. The birthday cake
deserves mention. It was 18 inches high
and bore the name and age of the hostess,
and was prettily decorated with 80
small American flags, which served as
souvenirs of the occasion. Each guest
received a smile and a handshake from
"Grandma" before departing, and left
with her many good wishes.
Mrs. Filgate came here from Leeds,
P. Q., about 25 years ago, and during
her residence here she has made many
friends, both young and old, by her kind
and cheerful disposition.
