I went with a friend who was picking up a golden retriever pup from a farm in Franklin County, Missouri. I was looking for another dog to keep my scottie, Sadie Mae, company. I had picked another pup from a picture for myself and went to see him in person. As I was holding this pup, I happened to glance down and saw a puppy sitting at my feet. I decided to visit with him, too, and that puppy is the one I wound up taking home with me. And I'm so glad I did.

Cooper was a character. If it was time to feed him, and I halted for any reason, he would come marching over to me barking in a way that left no doubt in my mind that he did not want me messing about.

The thing about goldens, is that you have no doubt that they love you. They are the best friends you can have. I love all dogs and every dog that I've had in my life have a piece of my heart, but Cooper was absolutely special. He was my best friend.

As he got old, he developed really bad arthritis in his rear legs and at the end we had to support him to get him outside. When he was diagnosed with cancer and was suffering, we had to let him go where he could be pain free. His friend, Sadie Mae, joined him six months later. In their memory, I now adopt senior dogs and encourage you to consider doing the same.

Miss you still, big boy. Save a place for me!
