Son of Emery and Ella McClellan Read, he married Mary Ellen "Nell" Salter, moved to Texas in 1919 to work for Humble Oil and Refining Co. where he was superintendent and acting manager for the plan in Baytown and superintendent for the Humble Oil Refinery in Ingleside, TX. He owned a farm in Canal Twp. and he and his wife spent part of each summer there for many years.
