Daughter of Emery C. and Ella McClellan Read, she married George L. Southard, lived at 418 16th St, Franklin, was a society editor for the News-Herald, died in Franklin Hospital of intestinal obstruction, metastatic cancer of small bowel, per death certificate 042439-67, whose informant was Mrs. Edwin D. Miner, Naples, NY. Buried Apr 25 1967.

Franklin News-Herald Saturday, Apr 22 1967:
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Southard of 418 16th St. died at 11:45 pm Friday in Franklin Hospital. She had been in failing health the past two years, but had been active until recently. Death followed surgery performed yesterday. She was born in Clearfield Feb. 17, 1890, daughter of Emery C. Read.

She came to Franklin with her family at the age of two years. She was the News-Herald's first society editor, holding the position for several years prior to her marriage. During World War II she returned to work for the newspaper and remained there for three years. she was active in civic and social affairs of the community. A member of St. John's Church, she devoted much time to church work; had a major role in the activities of the Franklin-Venango Chapter of the Red Cross, and was a member of the Wednesday Club.

She married George L. Southard Aug. 15, 1923, in Franklin, with Dr. Martin Aigner of St. John's Episcopal Church officiating. Mr. Southard died Dec. 23, 1964.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Edwain D. (Shirley) Miner of Naples, NY; three grandchildren, Dr. Robert L. Stephen of Beverly Hills, CA, James S. Stephen of New Orleans, and Mrs. Douglas (Barbara) Goetschius of Greene, NY; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert E. Read of Glens Falls, NY, and Francis N. Read of Baytown, TX; a sister, Capt. Katherine Y. Read, US Army retired, of Atlanta, GA. Deceased are two brothers, Clyde M. and Karl Read.

Services will be at 2 pm Tuesday at Burger Funeral Home, with Rev. Reginald E. Moore, rector of St. John's Church, officiating. Interment will be in Franklin Cemetery.
