Joanna Hire Grooms, 96, of Duncan went to rest in the arms of Jesus, Tuesday, April 21, 1998, in Duncan. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Immanuel Baptist Church with Rev. Jack Robins officiating and the Rev. Randy Southerland assisting. Burial will be in Duncan Cemetery under the direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home. Joanna was born Jan 8, 1902, in Tennessee to Martin W. and Patty Freeman Hire. On March 13, 1920, she married Derrell Grooms in Wichita Falls. He preceded her in death Aug. 29, 1973. Mrs. Grooms was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. During the 1940' and 50's Darrell and Joanna operated an upholstery shop on East Main, later moving it to their home and adding floor covering to their business.
She is survived by two sons, Tom and his wife, Novaleen of Duncan and TD of Coyle; four daughters, Derreline Land of Oklahoma City, Patty Harris, Gloria Culp and Nellie Grooms all of Duncan; a sister Ethel Robertson of Duncan; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson Fred Derrell Land; a daughter-in-law Betty Sue Grooms; two sons-in-law, Leo Land and Buddy Harris; her parents and 10 brothers and sisters.
Joanna was a beautiful and loving wife, Mama, Mammaw, Meemo, sister and aunt. Her family was the center of her life. She will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Immanuel Baptist Chirch or the charity of choice.
