Franz was a native of Württemberg. He immigrated to the United States and settled in Saint Louis, Missouri. About 1847 he married Margaretha Buddermeier and they had six children: Margaretha, Josephine, Emilie, Bertha, Theodore and Arthur. He was an umbrella-maker by trade. Franz died of erysipelas.
