Born July 17, 1930, in New Iberia and a resident of Madison, Wis., Mrs. Burleigh died Friday, Sept. 1, 2006, at University of Wisconsin Hospital.

Mrs. Burleigh was the daughter of Sadie Belanger Dupuy and Carroll Davis Dupuy. She grew up in Louisiana and Puerto Rice. In 1950, she met and married Calvin Herbert Burleigh, a native of Biddeford, Maine, who was working in the sugar care industry at the time in Aguirre, Puerto Rice. In 1957, following the birth of their four children, the family moved to Biddeford, Maine, where they worked the Burleigh family farm until 1960. She lived in Houma until the loss of her beloved husband in 1993. She was a devoted daughter, wife and mother, an accomplished cook and an avid reader, card player and sports fan. She loved fishing with her family in the waters around Last Island, dancing, music, theater and travel. In 1993, she moved to Madison, Wis., where she worked as a volunteer librarian at Meriter Retirement Community. She asked to be remembered for her “love of her beautiful family and wonderful life they shared together.”

She is survived by her four children, Susan Burleigh Weigandt and husband Paul of Rhinelander, Wis., David Burliegh and wife Ellen of Asheville, N.C., Ann Smith and husband Steve of Richardson, Texas, and Ellen Cook and husband Mark of Madison, Wis.; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Burleigh was preceded in death by her parents, Sadie Belanger Dupuy and Carroll Davis Dupuy; and husband, Calvin, a former Southdown Sugar Company executive and international sugar cane consultant in Houma.
