Born in Fuscaldo, Cosenza, Calabria, Padre Girolamo Gigli OP., entered the Order of Preachers at Soriano and made his studies in Naples. Regent of studies and prior at the latter city's convent of San Domenico Maggiore, elected provincial at an early age, he was called to Rome by Pope Pius IX and named vicar general of his Order. Rendering services for various congregations, mainly as a consultor, he lectured at the Biblioteca Casanatense, of which he was named librarian on November 8, 1850. Known for his excellent knowledge of Saint Thomas Aquinas and for being a skillful Latinist, he served as prior of the Dominican community of Santa Maria sopra Minerva. In 1859, the named Pontiff appointed him Master of the Apostolic Palace. Considered to be liberal minded, he was forced to resign his office in 1868 after one of his colleagues gave an imprimatur to too liberal a book. He spent his remaining years in Rome, where his remains lie at rest at the Campo Verano Cemetery in the chapel of his Order.
