Mrs. Annie Roper Cunningham, one of the first members of Sacred Heart Parish, passed away at her home, 116 North Cleveland Street, yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock following an illness of one week. Mrs. Cunningham was a cousin of the late assistant chief of the fire department, Bernard M. O'Neil, and visited the home the night of his death. She fell ill of appendicitis that night and peritonitis developed soon afterward. Mrs. Cunningham was 56 years of age. She was born and reared in Memphis, receiving her education at St. Agnes Academy. She was married to Albert S. Cunningham, who died 24 years ago. Mr. Cunningham was a significant figure in the public life of Memphis in his day. Shortly after the organization of Sacred Heart Parish in the late nineties, Mrs. Cunningham associated herself with the activities of the struggling church. She was one of the leaders in obtaining the funds for the erection of the beautiful church edifice that now stands at Cleveland Street and Jefferson Avenue. The funeral will take place from the residence tomorrow morning. The exact time will be announced later. An early mass will be said at Sacred Heart Church tomorrow morning also. Officials of the alumnae association of St. Agnes Academy have asked that all members of the association be present in front of Sacred Heart Church half an hour before the funeral. The alumnae will attend the funeral in a body. Mrs. Cunningham is survived by two sons, Albert S. and James P. Cunningham; three daughters, Miss Bessie Cunningham, Mrs. P.R. Conaghan and Mrs. Carl Belote, and four brothers, B.D. Roper of Greenville, Miss., James P. Roper of Memphis, W.L. Roper of Los Angeles and John J. Roper of Chicago. J.J. Collins has charge of the funeral arrangements. (Published in The Commercial Appeal, Memphis, TN, on September 10, 1926)
