For many years past, the old cemetery at the Eddy has been very much neglected, save by a few who have taken pride in keeping their individual plots in order. The unsightly appearance of the mass of rubbish and growth has been the cause of arousing the ire of some of our good women until forbearance had ceased to be a virtue with them and so they caused a public meeting to be called, last Thursday evening, which resulted in a bee, comprised of about forty men and several teams, gathering on last Saturday and thoroughly cleaning up the whole enclosure. The ladies, knowing well the secret of inspiring men to work through the demands of their stomachs, were busy all the forenoon preparing good things to eat and at noon an excellent meal was served on the pleasant lawn of Mrs. Conkling, who so generously tendered the use of both house and grounds to the service of the willing workers. Those who visited the cemetery on Sunday were surprised to see the improvements that had been made. The good work will be continued until the always-neglected and oldest cemetery in Haley shall be transformed into a bower of beauty. A permanent organization will be formed to keep the enclosure in order, hereafter.

The name of the newspaper is not with the obituary, was found in my Grandmother's scrapbook, it reads as follows:

Esther S. Conkling, widow of the late William C. Conkling, died at her home at the Eddy at 2:00pm on Thursday, March 3, 1910, from a combind attack of grippe and heart failure. About 6 years ago Mrs. Conkling sustained a servere attack of la grippe which left in its wake a weak heart action and a second attack which began about two weeks ago ended fatally.
The death of Mrs. Conkling removes one of our oldest, best known and most highly esteemed residents. A perfect lady at all times - under all circumstances, she seemed born to inspire the love and respect of all who were so fortunate as to be acquainted with.
Mrs. Conkling was born at Paupack, Pa., Feb. 5, 1821 and was therefore 89 years old. She was a daughter of Moses and Lucy (Kimble) Killam who were among the early settlers of that section. Their ancestors were of Puritan stock and came from Connecticut. Mrs. Conkling wsa one of a family of 15 children of whom there are at present but two living. They are Mrs. Eunice L. Atherton, of Paupack, and Mrs. Margaret McComb, of Toronto, Canada. The former is 82 years of age and the latter will be 80 in May of this year.
In 1843 Mrs. Conkling, then Miss Esther S. Killam, was married to William C. Conkling, and the pair settled in Hawley immediately after. Mr. Conkling at the time of marriage was conducting a general store opposite the Eddy depot on the property now owned by W.B. Ammerman. The former building has been removed many years. Later in 1846 Mr. Conkling bought property on the other side of the river and erected in 1847 the house occupied at present by the family and for many years conducted a store on the bank of the D & H canal in the building near the Conkling residence. Mr. Conkling was the first postmaster here and held the office for many years. The town was then known as Fallspart; was later changed to Paupack Eddy and at a still later date to Hawley. In the early days the mail was brought from Lackawaxen once a week by horseback. Mr. Conkling died in October, 1890.
Besides the two sisters mentioned above Mrs. Conkling is survived by two daugthers and one son; Mrs. Emma F. Cortright, New York City; Anna A. and John F., at home; two grandchildren and three great-grand-children.
The funeral was hold on Sunday at 2:00 o'clock at the house. The services were conducted by Rev. W.S. Peterson. Interment was made in the Eddy cemetery. The pall bearers, members of High Sun Tribe, I.O.R.M. were F.W. Schalm, Henry Reafler, John Thielke, Sr., John S. Deck, Wm. H. Guinn and A.L.
