Shelbyville - Abraham Goodman, state-co-chairman of the United Jewish Appeal, ardent Zionist, honorary president of the Southeastern Indiana Jewish Welfare Federation, and business and civic leader, passed away late Sunday night at the W. S. Major hospital following a brief illness. He was 65-years-old.

Mr. Goodman, founder of a local department store, established a chain of eleven department stores in central Indiana over a period of 40 years during which time his reputation in the realm of philanthropy, both locally, and nationally became prominent.

He was known nationally for his work in the Zionist movement and had an important role in the establishment of the State of Israel two years ago. He visited Israel 13 times in the last 25 years, returning from his last trip only this spring.

‘Man of the Year’

Last spring he was chosen "Jewish Man of the Year’ for 1949 by this newspaper for his outstanding service and interest in Jewish activities and philanthropy.

He founded the Southeastern Indiana Jewish Welfare Federation which has won national recognition for its exceptionally high standards on a per capita basis in contributing to the United Jewish Appeal.

He was a member of the Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation, Columbia Club, B’nai B'rith, Jewish Community Center Association, and in this city was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club, member of the board of the Farmers National Bank and a stockholder and officer of the Shelbyville Development Co. and Shelby Industries Inc. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Knights of Pythias and Odd Fellows Lodges.

He was born in Poland and left home at the age of 17 for England before sailing for America. After two years in New York he came to the Middle West and in 1910 settled in this city.

Other Goodman stores were formed in Crawfordsville, Greenfield, Knightstown. Connersville, Rushville, Franklin, Columbus, Madison and Rockville.
