William Thomas Joyner, Jr., of Raleigh, died on Tuesday, November 22, 2016. Born in Raleigh on December 13, 1923, he was the son of the late Col. William T. Joyner and Sue Kitchin Joyner. He received his high school diploma from the Virginia Episcopal School in 1941.
Joyner joined the US Naval Reserve, via the V-12 Navy College Program, while a student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Upon graduation in 1944, he completed his officer training in Plattsburgh, NY, and was assigned to the USS LSM-35. In 1945, his ship took part in amphibious landing operations in the Philippine Islands, during the Lingayen Gulf and Cebu Island campaigns.
After the war Joyner entered the UNC School of Law, where he served on the Student Board of Editors of the North Carolina Law Review. Upon graduation from UNC Law in 1949, he joined the firm of Joyner and Howison, where he practiced until his retirement from the bar in 1980.
In 1954, he married Marguerite Steele Burton of Raleigh, who predeceased him in 1991.
Joyner was an active member of many organizations, including the Carolina Country Club, the North Carolina Bar Association, the Raleigh YMCA, St. Michael's Episcopal Church, the Terpsichorean Club, the Wake County Bar Association, and the Wake County Board of Elections.
His hobbies and interests included aerobics, golf, opera, politics, and travel.
Survivors include a brother, Walton K. Joyner of Raleigh; a son, William H. Joyner and his wife Jacqueline Sifford Joyner, of Ridgefield, CT; a daughter, Marguerite J. Smith and her husband J. Matthew Smith, of Pleasant Garden, NC; and five grandchildren, Griffin, Ethan, Mattie, Caroline, and Levi.
