Ethel Gruther passed away peacefully on January 14 in Venice, Florida. She was 98 years old. Ethel was born in Thorndike, Maine on October 8, 1918, the daughter of Thomas Hemphill and Lizzy Walton Hemphill. She graduated from Unity High School in 1935 and Central Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in Lewiston, Maine in 1941. She entered the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in 1942 and served in the 67th General Hospital in Taunton, England for 3 years.
She married Robert Gruther in 1948 and lived in St. Petersburg, Florida, where she worked for many years as a nurse at St. Anthony’s Hospital and also as a private duty nurse.
She is predeceased by sister Avis Smith and her son Clayton and sister Edith Coulter. She is survived by sister Thelma Whitehouse, nephews Glendon Whitehouse and Frederick Whitehouse and their families and nephew Melvin Smith.
She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Clearwater, Florida.
