May 28, 1926 - January 13, 2017

ROCKY MOUNT - Inez Winstead Allsbrook, age 90, passed away on Friday, January 13, 2017. Born in Sharpsburg, NC on May 28, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Jerry Winstead and Willie Mae Winstead. She was also preceded in death by her husband of almost 60 years, Joseph Lee “Joe” Allsbrook; an infant son Bruce Lee Allsbrook; sister, Frances Winstead Smith; and brothers William Worsley “Pete” Winstead, Jr. and Jerry Lorenza “Sonny” Winstead.

After graduating from high school, Inez moved to Rocky Mount, NC where she lived her entire Life. She and Joe were married on August 9, 1946 and in 1950, Inez and Joe became the owners of the Dairy Queen by the City Lake in Rocky Mount, NC. Her smiles and friendly nature greeted customers for over 35 years, dipping millions of Dilly Bars and serving cones with the curl on top.

Her life’s great passions were family, friends, church, and playing bridge. The most enjoyable and important part of Inez’s life was her family. She loved being a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She raised two wonderful sons and enjoyed working with them at the Dairy Queen, scouting and school projects, ball games, and travel. She enjoyed many years at her beach condo in Indian Beach, NC watching her grand-children and great grand-children playing in the ocean. She was a faithful member of West Haven Presbyterian Church since 1954 and served as an Elder, received the Honorary Life Membership of Presbyterian Women, served as Circle Chairperson, and founder of the GEMS Senior Luncheon group. For decades, Inez was always at the heart of the kitchen serving meals at church events. Inez played Bridge for almost 50 years, leading groups at Tau Valley and Northgreen Country Clubs as well as many bridge benefits in the community. Inez loved and was loved by many special friends from Rocky Mount to the coast of North Carolina.

Inez is survived by her two sons, John Joseph Allsbrook and his wife, Carolyn, of Rocky Mount; Jerry Lee Allsbrook and his wife, Cat Rudd, of Raleigh; grand-daughter Melissa Allsbrook Koehler of Marietta, GA; grandson Joseph Allen “Joey” Allsbrook of Greensboro; great grandson Austin Robert Koehler and great granddaughter Emily Caroline Koehler of Marietta, GA; and sister Virginia Winstead Durham of Birmingham, AL.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Timothy C. Smith and nurse Ms. Denise Moore for their many years of professional and compassionate care, the staff at Brookdale Senior Living, and Hospice of Nash General Hospital. Special thanks to her angelic care givers Patsy Pittman and Vickie Morris for their devotion, friendship, and love. Her dear friend, Mary Tanner, recently deceased, enjoyed spending many Friday nights with Inez.
