First Lieutenant Jesse Mechem, Infantry, was killed in action while commanding the 3rd Platoon, Company B, 5th Battalion, 60th Infantry (Mechanized), 3rd Brigade, 9th Infantry Division during Operation Hop Tac I to secure and repair Highway 4 across the 59 km of Dinh Tuong Province in the aftermath of Tet 1968.
