DIED
CRAIG - At Fergusons Falls on Wednesday, April 7th, 1909,
Mr. R. Craig, aged 83 years.
Craig - Robert Craig, a native of Paisley, Scotland, died at his home in Fergusons Falls on April 7th, 1909 at the ripe old age of 82 years. He was only a boy when his parents came to this country, and in his youth he tried the tinsmith trade for a time, but this not suiting his taste, he engaged in tanning at the busy hamlet of McEwen's. Over a quarter of a century back he removed to Fergusons Falls, there to continue his trade. Subsequently mercantile life attracted him and he took up a line of groceries in which the last few years of his life was spent. In these various ways he established himself in the countryside round about a man of integrity and honour, notes the Lanark Era. About 60 years ago he married Miss Brown of Lanark and she remained his beloved and devoted partner for fifty years when death took her away. Two sons and two daughters were born to them - Mrs. Charles Hollinger, Grand Forks, N.D.; Bertha, at home; Charles, died in Western Ontario; James is in North Dakota. The funeral took place to Prestonvale on April 9th, Rev. Wm. McDonald of Lanark conducting the services.
Lanark Era, April 16th, 1909
Mr. Robert Craig
At the ripe age of 86 years, Robert Craig, a well known and highly respected resident of Ferguson's Falls, passed away last Wednesday.
The infirmities of extreme age had been creeping on for some time past and told heavily; the step once light and elastic grew slow and feeble, the eye once bright grew dim, the voice once strong now uncertain, all these were signs of a vitality diminished, a body weakened, signs that the end was near. and at last all that was mortal of him lay in the chill of the silence.
Robert Craig was a native of Paisley, Scotland, the famous Lanarkshire town whence came so many of Lanark's first men. He was only a boy when he landed on the new Western Main. The future lay before him. He tried the tinsmith trade but found that not to suit his tastes. The trade of tanning next engaged his time at the then busy hamlet of McEwen's we see him plying his trade.
Over a quarter of a century back he removed to Ferguson's Falls, there to continue his trade. Subsequently mercantile life attracted him and he took up a line of groceries in which the last few years of his life were spent.
