The second of seven children, Archiel Josephus Fiems was born to Joannes Fiems and Leonie DeVrieze in Oostkamp, Belgium. He and his older brother Camiel both immigrated to the United States in 1912 with Camiel deciding to stay in the Quad Cities between Illinois and Iowa. Archiel instead made his way farther north residing in the Stayner area of Simcoe County, Ontario. A tobacco farmer, he eventually married late in life to Mary McGillivray. They had no children.
