Romanus Josephus Fiems, the third of seven children, was born to Joannes Fiems and Leonie DeVrieze in Oostkamp, Belgium. Romanus traveled with his older brothers Camiel Alois Fiems and Achiel Josephus Fiems to the United States in 1912. However, duty called - Romanus returned to Belgium and with his younger brother Henri Camiel, enlisted in the fighting of World War I. Romanus was killed in fighting May 1916 in Hoogstade, Belgium. Henri, instead, died in a French military hospital for civilian prisoners of was in Sedan from wounds sustained in battle.
