Bill first married Emma Josephine Alston (1884-1941) in Mercer County, Missouri in 1900. Their first child Charlie Edward was born in Mercer County, Missouri the next year.
He took his family to Seattle in late summer 1901, where their daughter Ethel May was born in 1902. Then, they moved to Mabton, Washington in late 1902, where his parents and extended family members had settled that same year. Bill worked as a building carpenter and laborer, and he and Emma had 7 more children: Paul Prentis, Rosa "Pearl", Vera Elizabeth, Leonard Lee, Edith Almira, Carl, and Marian Ruth.
In 1919, Bill and Emma moved to Yakima, and in 1928, they moved back to Seattle, where he was employed as a janitor for a medical office and a realty company.
Four months after Emma's death in 1941, Bill remarried in Seattle, at age 63, to Louise (Kraus) Heffernan, who also had been widowed 10 months before. They spent the last 17 years of their lives together in a home near Lincoln Park in southwest Seattle. Bill and Louise also owned a small farm near the Canadian border in Sumas, Washington, where they enjoyed several years in retirement with their draft horses.
