Mrs. Helen Underwood Merrell - age 75, of 10111 String Town Rd., died Tuesday morning at the family home. She was a member of McCalla Avenue Baptist Church where she was a member of the Winsone Bible Class, member of the Cynthiana Home Demonstration Club, Burlington Chapter O.E.S. a mother advisor for the Rainbow Girls for 16 years and a retired secretary of McCalla Avenue Baptist Church. Survivors: husband, Emory C. Merrell, step-son, James Merrell, Kodak, John William Merrell, Knoxville, Howard Eugene Merrell, Rutledge; sisters, Mrs. Jamie Wearing, Athens, Mrs. Mildred Catlett, Knoxville, Mrs. Bernice Billingsley, Atlanta, brother, Ben Underwood, Knoxville; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral service 7:30 p.m. Thursday at McCalla Avenue Baptist Church. Dr. Wayne Nicholson officiating. The body will lie in state at the church from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday. Interment 10:30 a.m. Friday at Lynnhurst Cemetery. Active pallbearers: Dr. J. Herbert Gilmore, Jr. Rev. Larry Beeler, Rev. Jimmy Burkhart, Rev. Bob Kelly, Rev. Gene Leamon and Rev. David McMahan.
