ALLEN J. FENLON JR.
(1927 - 2017)
Allen J. Fenlon Jr., 89, a resident of Valders, passed away on Saturday evening, February 4, 2017.
Al was born on February 17, 1927 to the late Allen and Esther (Thompson) Fenlon. He graduated from Valders High School with the class of 1945, afterward attending college and playing football at UW Oshkosh. He also played semi-pro football with the Manitowoc Braves, winning the 1949 State Championship. Al went on to serve his country as a First Sergeant with the 887th Field Artillery in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1950 to 1952. He worked for L.M. Barry & Company for many years, where he was the recipient of numerous national awards before becoming the owner of Fenlon's Bowl in Valders.
On June 15, 1964, Al married the love of his life, Rose Lydia Neumeyer. Together, they happily ran Fenlon's Bowl for 26 years. In 1980, they were thrilled when they broke the state record for a couples scratch series with a 1309. Al and Rosie always treasured the great memories, amazing friends, and fun times they had during their years in the bowling alley. In his later years, Al could always be seen driving around Valders, waving and talking to all his friends and neighbors that he valued so much. He also greatly appreciated the friendships he made while working out and swimming at Harbor Town Wellness Center in Manitowoc. With everyone he met, he always had a joke to tell, a story to share, a friendly greeting and a smile on his face. He loved life. Al also dearly loved and was extremely proud of his grandchildren, Forrest and Ireland, actively following all of their academics, sports, and activities these past 21 years. He enjoyed every minute he was able to spend with them. Al was a wonderful father, an outstanding grandfather, and one of the best people you could ever meet. He will be greatly missed.
Throughout his life, Al was an avid Packer fan; hopefully they can continue to win without him! Al was also very active in the Valders and Manitowoc County communities. He was a founding member and the chairman of the Lakeshore All Sports Hall of Fame for 23 years and after retiring from his position, he continued to garner advertising and donations until he was well into his 80's. He was also president of the Valders Improvement Corporation for 13 years, served two terms as chairman of the Manitowoc County Tavern League, founded the Tri-County Scratch Traveling Bowling League, and was a charter member and treasurer of the Class of 1945 Scholarship Fund. Additionally, Al was a member of the Manitowoc Elks Club, the V.F.W., and the Valders American Legion, serving as Commander of the Firing Squad since 1954. He was enshrined into the Manitowoc Bowling Association and the Lakeshore All Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. Al was very honored on April 29, 2015 to receive the Hall of Fame's first Commitment to Excellence Award and that forthwith was to be known as the Al Fenlon Commitment to Excellence Award.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, John and Tracy Fenlon of Valders; his grandchildren, Forrest Gregg and Ireland Rose Fenlon of Valders; and his step-granddaughter, Carly Jo Lulloff of Greenleaf, WI.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Al and Esther Fenlon; his wife, Rosie Fenlon; his son, Thomas E. Fenlon; his step-daughter, Sharon K. Lulloff; and his step-grandson Led L. Lulloff.
The family will greet relatives and friends on Friday, February 10, 2017 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Clarks Mills from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The visitation will continue on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until 10:15 a.m.
Funeral Services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Clarks Mills. Officiating the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Richard Klingeisen. Military Rites will be accorded by the V.F.W. - Otto Oas Post 659 and the Valders American Legion-Thompson-Burkard Post 28 following the Mass. Entombment will take place Monday at Knollwood Mausoleum.
