Samuel Frost, the stated murderer on the stone, had been previously indicted for murder. In 1789 Frost killed his father, but was acquitted on the grounds of insanity. Soon after the acquittal Elisha Allen agreed to be Frost's guardian. Allen was rewarded for his gesture by having his ward inflict a fatal blow to his head with a rock (or a hoe) while the two were working in a garden. Frost was found guilty of this murder and was sentenced to death. On October 31, 1793, he was hanged in Worcester before a crowd of 2,000 spectators.
