Mary was one month old when her mother, Lucinda, passed away. She was raised in the household of her father's older brother and his wife, Simon and Helen Huber, appearing with them on the 1910 and 1920 census, and on the 1930 Altoona, Ward 14, census with Simon and Helena in the household of Alphonse and Mary Engelman. Also on the 1930 Logan Township census, in the household of Edward and Martha Huber, a daughter, Mary C. Huber, age 32, is listed. This is Mary's older sister, Margaretta Catherine Huber, born 1898, married in 1931 to Raymond Wilker.

Mary's middle name was Irmina, while Margaretta's middle name was Catherine. They were both given the name of their father's younger sister, Catherine, 1864-1955, who took her Vows in 1886, as Sister Irmina, O.S.B.
