Alex was the son of Hughes Jefferson Warden and Susan Ann Williams Warden Baldenburg Jordan. The Wardens were early pioneers of Fayette County, Virginia, which is now Raleigh County, West Virginia. Alex's father, Hughes never returned from the Civil War. He supposedly died at Appomattox, but it was rumored that he went west and just never returned home. Alex enlisted in the Army on 18 May 1870 in Charleston, Kanawha County, West Virginia, and deserted on 23 July 1871.
Alex married Susan Rodgers on the 29th day of February 1872 in Raleigh County, West Virginia. He was listed as widowed, when he married Susan's sister, Sarah E (Sallie) Rodgers on the 7th day of January 1882 in Fayette County, West Virginia.
