NEWPORT NEWS - Eugene Hendrix, age 74, passed away Saturday June 26, 2004. He was born in Snowball, Ark., on Jan. 23, 1930 where he resided until the age of 17, when he left to join the U.S. Army. He completed basic training at Ft. Knox, Ky. And was then transferred to Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. where he was a platoon sergeant of the 61st Battalion. He was deployed to Korea during the Korean War where he spent 16 months, most of which was on the front lines. While duty stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., he met his wife Eula Mae Smith (Hendrix) of Mountain Grove, Mo. To this union five children were born, four daughters, Regina, C. Bonnie Bridges (deceased), Teresa, and Tammy; and one son, Thomas E. Hendrix.

Eugene retired from the military in 1968 after 20 years service with an honorable discharge. He worked for Williams Paving Co. in Hampton and later went into Civil Service work. He worked in aviation when he retired from the Civil Service. He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. We will all miss him very deeply.

Eugene is survived by his wife of 52 years, Eula Hendrix; daughters, Regina Strickland of Ga.; Teresa Lynn Stephens and husband Rick, Tammy Michelle Perry and husband Larry; son, Thomas E. Hendrix and wife Dolores; granddaughters, Christina Caffarel and husband Robert of La., Stephanie Lewis, Mallory and Ashley Strickland of Ga.; grandsons, Joseph Hendrix of Newport News, Christopher Hendrix and wife Katie of Ga., Ricky Stephens of Walton, Ky., Brandon Hendrix of Newport News, Brian and Timothy Perry of Newport News; great grandsons, Robert Caffarel of La., and Allendrick Patterson of Ga.; sisters, Jearlene McMullin of Ok., and Adene Barnes and husband Johnny of Boonville, Mo., and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by daughter, C. Bonnie Bridges, granddaughter, Jennfier Lewis and grandson, Nicholas Hendrix

family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home, Newport News. Services will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 10 a.m., the Rev. Henry B. Sudduth officiating. Burial, with full military honors, will be at Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton, following the service.
