He has a gravestone:

"To the memory of Edward Pethybridge Sergemarker of this parish who departed this life the...day of September 1785 in the 88th year of his life. Also of Jonathan son of the above Edward Pethybridge who departed this life the 20th day of February 1798 in the 51 year of his life."

This gravestone is now mostly unreadable, but was transcribed earlier. It was found via a map in the possession of the Moretonhamptead History Society. It is located in the middle of the A section that is in the front to the left of the church door if you stand with your back to the door.

Generally the Pethybridge family seems to have been prominent in the wool trade in the 17th and 18th centuries. He was the son of Thomas Pethybridge of Manaton 1655 - 1710 and his wife Agnes Caunter 1655 - 1723.

In 1730, he took an apprentice as a "woolcomber." By 1748 and at the time of his death he was a "serge maker." One wonders if he took over his late father-in-law's business after 1730 since Arthur Tozer's sons were dead by the time his will was probated.

His property was insured by the Sun Fire Company which gives us an inventory:

"3 May 1748. Edward Pethybridge, Sergemaker. Hshld gods in his dwho., wareho., wool chambers and yarn chambers under one roof, stone slated and thatched. L200"

"8 July 1756. Edward Pethybridge, Sergemaker. Dwhs. and offices adj., stone and thatched L100; Hshld gods and stk in ted. therein. L200. L300."

He was a "nonconformist" and his children were baptized at the Cross Chapel in Mortonhampstead as was his first wife.

He had two wives. The first was Susanna Tozer who he married in Lustleigh on 14 April 1730. She was the daughter of Arthur Tozer (born in Lustleigh 1664) and Elizabeth Berry and was baptized in 1704. Importantly Arthur Tozer like Edward Pethybridge was a sergemaker. She seems to have been an heiress of sorts. Arthur left a will in 1730 with only Susanna, her brother John who soon died, and several young grandchildren as heirs, his wife and other children being dead. She seems to have died c. 1739, perhaps when her last child was born. He married his second wife Mary Wrayford 22 July 1740, also in Lustleigh although they were listed as being "of Moreton." She was likely born in 1710, the daughter of Thomas Wrayford, and was baptized at Cross Chapel on 30 July 1710. Interestingly, her step-son Joseph Pethybridge married a granddaughter of Thomas Wrayford. The less-likely candidate is a Mary born in 1705, daughter of Jonathan Wrayford, also baptized at Cross Chapel. Mary Pethybridge died in October 1785.

Children of first marriage to Susanna Tozer:
* Thomas #1 , baptized 25 Mar 1731, buried 23 Jan 1733, twin?
* Elizabeth, baptized 12 Mar 1731, buried 3 Aug 1776
* Thomas #2, baptized 5 Nov 1733 - aft 1768, may have married Susanna Frost in 1756, buried 11 March 1802 as Mr. Thomas Pethybridge, left will
* Susanna #1 , baptized 26 June 1735 - bef 1743 when name was reused in father's second marriage
* Mary, baptized 5 May 1737, may have married 24 Dec 1759 John Rice (who was also baptized at Cross Chapel), a Mary Rice married widowed John Hodge in 1785, Mary Hodge was buried 28 Feb 1819 at age 84
* Joseph 1739-1825 who married Elizabeth Wrayford in MH in 1762 (listed as John--since his eldest son was John perhaps he was John Joseph), no baptism record found.

Children of second marriage to Mary Wrayford:
* Jonathan 1742 - 1798, also a serge-maker
* Susanna #2 b. 1743, may have married in 1767 John Bridgman--it is worth noting that John Bridgman Sr. and Jr. were also serge makers.

Mortonhampstead, Manaton, and Lustleigh are about four miles from each other.
