This gravestone is mostly unreadable but was transcribed earlier. It is found in the middle of the B section which is behind the Tozer Chest.
His wife was Elizabeth Wrayford b. 1739. However the marriage record on 8 Nov 1762 in Mortonhamptead was between JOHN Pethybridge and Elizabeth Wrayford. It is clear from the gravestone that his wife was an Elizabeth and that their first son was born in 1764. This might be an error in the parish records. Or perhaps he was John Joseph, particularly since his eldest son was also John. There is no burial record for his mother either, only the remarriage of his father.
Joseph was the son of Edward Pethybridge, a prominent serge-maker who is also buried here, and Susanna Tozer, the daughter of Arthur Tozer, also a serge-marker, and Elizabeth Berry. There is no baptism record for him. However, his family was consistently baptized at Cross Chapel and, according to the Mortonhamptead History Society, there are many gaps in those records from c.1737 to 1769. His baptism likely fell into that gap. Since his father remarried in 1740, it seems very likely that his mother died when he was born which might have effected the baptism schedule.
Elizabeth was the daughter of Joseph Wrayford 1699-1772 and Sarah Rews 1701-1783. Her parents married in 1723 in Drewsteignton, Devon, but their children were baptized in Moretonhampstead. Sarah Rews was the daughter of Rogers Rews d. 1734 and Margery Avery d. 1737. They married in Exeter in 1688 and baptized their children in Drewsteignton.
Children of Joseph and Elizabeth were:
* John 1764 - 1824, no baptism record, burial and gravestone record
* Samuel 1771 - 1842, no baptism record, burial record, Joseph marriage witness
* Elizabeth 1775 - 1776, no baptism record, 3 Aug 1776 burial record with father listed
* Richard 1776 - 1820, baptized 25 Aug 1776
* Phillip 1780 - 1839, baptized 25 March 1780
* Jonathan 1782 - 1860, baptized 17 March 1782
* Edward 1784 - 1858, baptized 25 July 1784
