Thelma L. Bailey
HYDE PARK – Mrs. Thelma Louise Bailey, formerly of Hyde Park, died Monday night, Aug. 13, 2007, at Otsego Manor. She was 88.
Thelma was born May 18, 1919, in Cherry Valley, a daughter of Harold Ivan and Linda Melissa (Camp) Doolittle.
Raised in Cherry Valley, she later attended school in Cooperstown, and graduated from Cooperstown High School with the Class of 1937.
On Nov. 4, 1938, Thelma married Walter Avalo Jarvis in Lentsville. He died June 10, 1956, as the result of an automobile accident in Tuscon, Ariz. She then married Robert Glenn Bailey on May 31, 1957, in the First Presbyterian Church of Cooperstown.
Throughout her life, she was employed as a waitress and served as a receptionist for three years at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown. In later years, she enjoyed helping out at Pop’s Place, a restaurant and ice cream stand on State Highway 28 in Milford, owned and operated by her daughter and son-in-law, Ginny and Don Elliott.
For many years, Thelma and her husband, Bob, made their home in Hyde Park, where she was a longtime member of Faith Baptist Church. She was also a member and past president of the Clark F. Simmons American Legion Post No. 579 Ladies Auxiliary in Cooperstown.
Thelma is survived by her husband of 50 years, Bob; three daughters, Mrs. Linda Attard, and her husband, Joe, of Ilion, Mrs. Virginia L. Elliott, and her husband, Donald, of Milford, and Mrs. Carol Ann Portras, and her husband, Alfred, of Manchester, Maine; four grandchildren, Deborah Ann Javitz, and her husband, John, Donald W. Elliott, and his wife, Janet, Dennis R. Elliott and his wife, Wendy, and Christine Marie Portras; three great-grandchildren, Jessica, Blake and Emily Elliott; and a half-sister, Evelyn D. Utter, of Cherry Valley.
In addition to her parents and her first husband, Thelma was predeceased by a sister, Myrtle Irene Devenpeck, who died June 17, 1969.
A memorial service was held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, 2007, in the chapel at Otsego Manor, 128 Phoenix Mills Cross Rd., Cooperstown, with the Rev. Michael Glisson, pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Hyde Park, officiating. The service of committal and burial followed in Hartwick Seminary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial gifts may be made to Catskill Area Hospice Hope Foundation, 1 Birchwood Drive, Department FH, Oneonta, NY 13820.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of the Connell, Dow & Deysenroth Funeral Home.
